Broadway In Boston announces the upcoming 2012-2013 Lexus Broadway Season which will include eight theatrical productions at the Boston Opera House and the venerable Citi Performing Arts Center Colonial Theatre.

“Boston is a world-class city and for the past 28 years Broadway In Boston has been proud to be part of the city’s cultural fabric,” said Rich Jaffe, Vice President of Broadway In Boston.  “Each time we bring a Broadway show to Boston, we add hundreds of employees to the payroll and attract thousands of consumers to downtown Boston for each performance. The economic impact has been extensive throughout the years.  With one of Boston’s biggest and most exciting blockbuster seasons to date, we look forward to continuing to keep Boston’s Theatre District thriving as we expect more sold out performances next season than ever before.”

Two of Broadway’s biggest productions make their way to the Boston Opera House during the 2012-2013 Lexus Broadway In Boston Season.  From the Emmy® Award-winning creators of “South Park” comes the highly anticipated THE BOOK OF MORMON, winner of nine 2011 Tony® Awards including Best Musical.  The National Theatre’s powerfully moving epic drama War Horse, recipient of five 2011 Tony® Awards including Best Play, is a remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship brought to life on stage through the life-sized puppets created by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company.

Also slated for the Boston Opera House is SISTER ACT featuring original music by eight time Oscar® winner Alan Menken.  Broadway’s musical comedy is a tribute to the universal power of friendship, and is a reason to rejoice!  The Tony® Award-winning production of MARY POPPINS—based on the original stories by P.L. Travers and the beloved Walt Disney film returns to Boston following its successful 2011 engagement.  Back by “Popular” demand, WICKED is Broadway’s biggest blockbuster.

Around the corner on Boylston Street, the lights will shine bright at the historic Citi Performing Arts Center Colonial Theatre as Broadway In Boston, Emerson College and the Citi Performing Arts Center continue their ongoing commitment to keep Broadway on its stage – 112 years and counting!   The long-standing tradition of the Pre-Broadway tryout returns to the Citi Performing Arts Center Colonial Theatre with the World Premiere of TUCK EVERLASTING.  With a book by Tony® Award nominee Claudia Shear, music by Chris Miller, lyrics by Nathan Tysen and directed and choreographed by Tony® Award winner Casey Nicholaw, TUCK EVERLASTING is based on the novel by Natalie Babbitt and premieres June 2013.  Also scheduled this Season is the explosive Tony® Award-winning Best Musical MEMPHIS, Broadway’s tale of fame and forbidden love as inspired by actual events.  Kicking off the New Year at the Citi Performing Arts Center Colonial Theatre and “working its way back” to Boston following two sold out engagements seen by over 200,000 theatergoers from around New England, is the Tony® Award-winning Best Musical JERSEY BOYS, the story behind Rock and Roll Hall of Famers “The Four Seasons.”

Over 500 people from around the city celebrated today’s announcement including Broadway In Boston’s VIP and Premiere Season Ticket holders, group leaders, Arts and business leaders, city officials, partners from around the city, sponsors and the Boston media.  Highlights from the day included special live performances and guest appearances from the Broadway cast of MEMPHIS and SISTER ACT as well as “Joey” from War Horse
