Regional Opera Company of the Week: Boston Lyric Opera

Boston Lyric Opera (BLO) was founded in 1976 and has risen to be New England's largest opera company. Each season the company produces three mainstage productions at the companies home, the Citi Performing Arts Center Shubert Theatre, in Boston and a the annual Opera Annex production in a found space. throughout New England. This season fulfills he mission of BLO which is to produce artistically excellent productions of a diverse repertoire that entertain and inspire audiences while featuring emerging operatic talent in order to engage and educate the community of all ages.

The breadth and depth of education and community programs at Boston Lyric Opera ensure that your opera experience doesn't begin and end with the curtain. BLO has several programs specifically for students and schools. Through the Music! Words! Opera! Program teacher lead their students through the study of an operatic masterwork before applying it to an original opera work created by the classroom. The company also offers Vacation Week Institutes in five-day workshops and Dress Rehearsal tickets for high schools. Every year the company also offers an open house for opera lovers of all ages to come and get backstage tours. Boston Lyric Opera offers special programs like the Signature Series, Opera Night at the Boston Public Library, and Pre-performance lectures for adults.

Current Season:

This season the Boston Lyric Opera is offering new productions of Puccini's "Madama Butterfly,' Mozart's "Cosi Fan Tutte,' and Wagner's "Flying Dutchman.' The company's Opera Annex series will feature the American premiere of the Scottish composer James MacMillan's "Clemency,' a BLO co-commission. The Puccini and the MacMillan premiered last November and earlier this month but there are still two great new productions left in the season.
