Suffolk University & Actors’ Shakespeare Project are set to present the first public reading of James Carroll’s play based on his National Book Award-winning memoir.
American Requiem tells the story of a son and a father, a priest and his God, the gulf that opened between them during the Vietnam War era, and the love that was a bridge too late.

WHO: Playwright James Carroll is a distinguished scholar-in-residence at Suffolk University and the author of ten novels and seven works of non-fiction, including the New York Times bestselling Constantine’s Sword; House of War, which received the first PEN-Galbraith Award; and Jerusalem, Jerusalem: How the Ancient City Ignited Our Modern World, named a 2011 Best Book by Publishers Weekly.
Steven Bogart will direct the reading. Bogart is a director, playwright, drama teacher, designer and visual artist. He has directed over 100 plays and musicals and was a 2009 Massachusetts Cultural Council Grant recipient in playwriting.
The cast features Elliot Norton Award-winner Allyn Burrows*, Artistic Director of Actors’ Shakespeare Project, and ASP founding members Paula Langton* and Robert Walsh*; as well as Patrick Carroll*, recently seen on Broadway in the Tony nominated Good People, and James Carroll’s son.
